Saturday, September 20, 2008

In 1970, he was crushing the cassette 8-track. In the 1980s, it was the VHS VCR putting an end to the BETA. In the 1990 DVD's started the beginning of the end of videotapes. And in the 2000's, mp3 players and iPod in particular are about to start throwing dirt on the grave of CD. So what product or service that has been the norm for years, will be the one that saw the disappearance in 2010 of the ... This is one of the oldest technologies you have in your home. Your phone.

To be able to replace an old product or service, and a majority of households, you must have 3 things.
  • A need or want for a new product.
  • A new product that is better than the original.
  • A price that most people can afford
Even if it is in its infancy, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology from all 3 questions above with Flying Colors.
  1. How would you like to talk and see a friend or relative who lives in another state or country at any time you wanted? No more sending pictures or having to wait to see someone every two years. Now you can see on a video screen in real time video, while speaking to them on the phone. I would like.
  2. What if you could not only talk to someone and see them, but you could also have caller ID, call waiting ID, call waiting, voice mail, call forwarding, the conference calls, last call return, call blocking, do not disturb and more, all built right into your phone, at no additional cost for these services. It is very darn well.
  3. What if you have ALL the above mentioned features # 1 and # 2, unless you pay now with your local telephone company? What if it is less well, you saved hundreds of dollars a year? I can certainly afford it!
And that, my friends, is why VoIP and video phones are the iPod the next decade. You are local telephone company knows it's coming and they are preparing for that. Large Internet companies (Yahoo, Google, AOL, etc) are all ready to launch their versions. The Wall Street Journal predicts 70% of all homes have VoIP by the year 2010 ... only 4 years from now! 70%!

So, unless you still have 8 tracks in your car or are still trying to keep these records to scratch when you play on your disk, it might be time to consider something new to your residential telephone service.
